It should come as no surprise to anyone that the money lending industry is booming as people are living closer and closer (and even beyond) the edge of their normal income. And as with any market or industry that is booming like the car loan industry, that demand fuels the need for more competition, where the competitiveness comes down to the term and interest rate of the loan being offered.

It is a fine line for lenders to walk. They want to be as competitive as possible, but at the same time they try to keep a sharp eye out on the risk factor, where the risk comes in by providing a loan to someone with a low credit score. But that fine line moves constantly as competition increases, so you can find a car loan today with a very attractive interest rate and reasonable terms if you are willing to investigate the market.

Note that shopping for the auto loan is every bit as important as shopping for the right vehicle, and some would say it's even more important. The term indicates monthly payments that fall within your budget and the interest rate dictates how much interest you will be paying on that loan. There is little sense in finding the "perfect car" only to find that the best auto loan deal you can get puts the monthly payments outside of your budget. Instead of incurring dings on your credit report due to missing payments or late payments, you are further ahead to keep your credit report as clean as possible and get a car loan which is a better fit for your budget with a lesser car. This puts you in an excellent position to get an even better car loan deal in a couple years if you keep your credit report clean.

But with all the auto loan offers you find, how do you determine the bottom line of which one is really best, since they all claim to be the best? This is a difficult task and is going to require that you "look under the hood", or look at the details of the loan to find out what is really being offered.

The first step is to work out a budget. Sit down and figure out how much you can afford to spend on a car payment each month. Be realistic, and also figure in the cost of gas and a small account for maintenance. Not all maintenance is covered by a warranty, like "consumables" like tires, wiper blades, and even regular oil changes. Be brutally honest with yourself here, since you will be living with this decision for years to come.

Next, define the car you want to finance. While a new car probably offers a better interest rate on your auto loan, a late model used car can also be a very viable option that you should consider, because even though the interest rate on a used car is higher, the amount being financed is less and may work out better with your budget.

The next step is determining how much you can put down for a down payment. Even if you are doing a trade-in, most lenders will not give you the most attractive rate that they could if you do not have some kind of "cash investment" in the car. Again, be realistic, and consider the more you put down, the less you will need to finance.

Your last step is to start shopping for a cheap car loan. Car dealerships are sometimes willing to spend more time with you in negotiating the deal if you can tell them you are already approved for financing and just need to find the right car at the right price.

An online price quote would be a good option for you to pursue to you can at least compare what the dealer may be offering to what you got online. Compare interest rate and term (number of months) and see how they stack up. If your credit score is good, you will have more attractive options, but even with less-than-stellar credit, you can get a great cheap auto loan if you are willing to spend some time comparison shopping with as much detail and motivation that you put into finding the right car!
